Due to the covid-19 out-break, the Regional Summer Institutes on Scientific Teaching will be postponed to the summer of 2021. The good news is that we will be able to offer an online SI, as we have in the past, led by Bill Wischusen. Keep your eye on the newsletter or the website as we’ll be looking for ways to engage the community virtually.
Applying to the Regional Summer Institutes
Applications are reviewed by the respective regional organizing committees (see our regional site page for contact information). We welcome applicants from any institution or geographic area to apply to any of our regional sites. Faculty and future faculty are encouraged to apply as institutional teams of two or three where possible. Ideally, each team would include a junior and senior member. Faculty may be active in either instruction or administration. Acceptance is based on the comparative strength of participant answers, team justification, and administrator statements of institutional commitment to improving undergraduate education.
Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Awards (IRACDA) Postdoctoral Scholars are given priority status to attend a regional Summer Institute. The Summer Institutes are an excellent opportunity for IRACDA postdocs to develop their teaching skills and prepare to join the next generation of biomedical educators. Institutional Support & Expectations Beyond the Institute
Support from senior administrators is essential for creating a collective faculty responsibility for improving undergraduate education. As part of the application, campus leaders confirm funding and implementation support for proposed teams or individuals. Institutions support participants in implementing new teaching strategies, conducting related activities in their classes, and disseminating what they learned at the Summer Institute to their colleagues. Home institutions are responsible for covering travel costs. Costs to cover food/lodging/registration for the Summer Institutes vary by individual site, up to a few hundred dollars per site. Please follow up with the leader of the individual site to inquire about specific costs. Subsidies may be available for participants from lesser-resourced institutions or departments. Please inquire with a regional site leader prior to applying.
For institute attendees, participation is an extended experience and commitment that begins before the institute and continues through the academic year following the institute. Participants provide formal updates on implementation plans developed at the institute and attend an implementation follow-up meeting in the year following the Summer Institute. Attendees also agree to participate in surveys and other efforts to evaluate the efficacy of the Summer Institutes.
