UC Irvine seeks applications for the post of Assistant Teaching Professor in the School of Biological Sciences. Teaching Professor Faculty are full members of the Academic Senate. Advancement in this series is based on excellence in teaching, research in the candidater specific discipline and/or pedagogy, and service. The candidate will contribute to the undergraduate teaching mission of the department, in part by teaching in the core microbiology lecture and lab courses. The candidate can also develop new and innovative lab and/or lecture courses. We expect that the candidate will play a prominent role in biology education research, working with teaching and research faculty to develop, implement and assess innovative pedagogical initiatives.

The School is dedicated to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, offering support for the development of courses that incorporate evidence-based teaching practices, active learning strategies, and technologies that facilitate student engagement. Collaborative and interdisciplinary research is highly valued. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

The candidate are an outstanding scientist who holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology or a broadly related discipline, and who has innovative ideas for implementing and assessing evidence-based improvements to classroom and laboratory instruction. A teaching record at the university level is required (even if not specifically in Microbiology). Candidates with postdoctoral training and/or prior education research experience are preferred. Experience in any of the following areas is particularly sought:

  • teaching large undergraduate classes

  • applying evidence-based teaching practices including active learning and/or course-based undergraduate research experiences

  • using modern instructional technology

  • developing effective teaching strategies for diverse student populations
